Drew Barrymore and the Mondo Post

Because of my impending week-long absence (where I will be frolicking among the waves of Cabo) I have decided to write a mondo post to keep you informed of the important movie news. I will be combining three posts into one, so you should probably not sit down to read it all at once for fear you will stay up past your bedtime (Katie Hesser). Adios!

Movies out Friday the 24th

The Answer Man - It's an Indie film, but it stars Jeff Daniels and Lauren Graham (both are amazing). I hope it doesn't stay limited, but if so, I hope it at least comes to Scottsdale. I really wanna see it.

G-Force - Talking gerbils? No thanks.

Orphan - Crazy/possibly murderous little girl? Double no thanks.

The Ugly Truth - Gerard Butler is a babe and Katherine Heigl is pretty cool, but I don't really have high hopes for this one. I mean, I'm gonna see it, but I've got low expectations (usually that's the way to go for chick flicks and rom-coms).

DVDs out Tuesday the 28th

Dragonball: Evolution - This movie was wonderfully cheesy and Justin Chatwin was adorable AND hot (a very rare combo). I'm going to buy it just because I can (and I want to!).

Fast & Furious - Despite killing off one of my favorite characters in the first ten minutes, this movie still lived up to it's ancestors' high speed action and stupid plot line legacy. However, if you are in any way an action movie fan, you should see all of the F&F movies. They're important even though they border on dumb.

Movies out Friday the 31st

Aliens in the Attic - Looks mildly amusing and stars Ashley Tisdale and that hot guy from Step Up 2 so has potential.

The Collector - A Saw-esque film about some creeper and his booby-traps that kill or something. The trailer looked dumb (and had a spider in it) so I don't think so.

Funny People - I want to see this movie a lot. I love Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, and Jason Schwartzman and the premise just looks great. I'm a little bummed that I'm not going to be in town for it, but hopefully one of my loving friends will take me to see it when I return (ahem, Diana, ahem).

Classic goodies

Underrated movie of the post:
Never Been Kissed. Drew Barrymore embodies all the awkwardness of a teenager, but makes it funny as an adult. Half of you can't watch because it's just too embarrassing while the other half can't help but watch to see what kind of mess she gets herself in next. All of this doesn't amount to the real reason why this movie is so great: Michael Vartan. So fine.

Movies to see:
Answer Man, Dragonball: Evolution, Fast & Furious, Aliens in the Attic, Funny People and Never Been Kissed.

Trailers of the post. Theme: Hilarity.
Whip It! This is Drew Barrymore's directorial debut and just by the preview I can tell it's gonna be a winner. I can't wait to see it!

Extract. I don't really know what the plot is, but there are too many great actors in it to pass up. Hopefully it doesn't go drama-y and sticks with the pure, unadulterated comedy. (Yay Kristen Wiig!!)

Mystery Team. To balance out the trailers, I'm posting this movie with a bunch of no-name actors. It's Indie and looks a little silly, but it has promise.

Name 7 Drew Barrymore:
Donnie Darko, Ever After, Bad Girls, Music and Lyrics, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Batman Forever, He’s Just Not That Into You.

Kevin Bacon Game:
Drew Barrymore was in He's Just Not That Into You with Jennifer Aniston who was in Picture Perfect with Kevin Bacon: 2 steps.

Charlize Theron

DVDs out Tuesday

Coraline - I never saw it, but Molly said it was good so perhaps it will make it's way onto the queue of my very own Netflix account. Exciting!

Watchmen - I thought this movie was really cool! Despite Billy Crudup's big blue penis, I found it very interesting. It's too bad Jeffrey Dean Morgan had to die in the first five minutes though. But then again, he's always dying on me. Back on track, I don't know if I would ever buy this movie, but I think I would see it again given the chance.

Disgustingly beautiful goodies

Underrated movie of the post:
Aeon Flux. Alright, so this movie was kind of stupid. But I am always sucked in to watching it no matter what else is on TV! I don't know what it is, but this movie has a crazy hold over me. Maybe I have to buy it to break the curse...

Movies to see:
Dragonball: Evolution, Fast & Furious, Aeon Flux (on second thought, don't. Just in case.)

Trailers of the post. Theme: Trippy.
The Road. Who doesn't love a psychological thriller about a family surviving after the world ends? I know I do! (Attention. The first 42 seconds of this video is some annoying chick talking. So I would let it load a bit then fast forward. That is all.)

Triangle. This looks like a combination of Ghost Ship and Groundhog Day. Despite this, I actually may see it.

Name 7 Charlize Theron:
Monster, Trapped, Aeon Flux, Hancock, Italian Job, Sleepwalking, North Country.

Kevin Bacon Game:
Charlize Theron was in Trapped with Kevin Bacon: 1 step.

Quote Quiz #92 winner:

Vince Vaughn Take 2

Movie out Wednesday

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince(!): (Disclaimer: HP6 is my least favorite book and therefore my least favorite movie. Just warning you.) This movie was okay. I liked the humor they added to the story to keep the main story from depressing everyone. I was very impressed by the special effects. For instance, the opening to every "memory" that Harry watched where the liquid turned into wispy smoky stuff. That was cool. There was a bunch of new unnecessary crap they added instead of including more important stuff and the much anticipated kiss between Harry and Ginny was just ridiculous. There was a lot of Hermione whining and Draco looking stoned. And, of course, the best was Ron and his interaction with Lavender Brown (the whore). He's just a fantastic actor (the best of the three) and I love that they made him the comic relief. All in all, it was just okay.

Movie out Friday

(500) Days of Summer - I really wanna see this movie. I love Joseph Gordan-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel so it's going to be a winner no matter what. It is, however, only a limited release so I'll probably have to travel to Scottsdale again.

6 foot 5 inch goodies

Underrated movie of the post:
Mr & Mrs Smith. While VV was not a major character of this movie, he was, by far, a huge part in that he was hilarious.

Movies to see:
Harry Potter 6, 500 Days of Summer, and Mr & Mrs Smith.

Trailers of the post:
Couples Retreat. This looks great! A huge amount of my favorites doing a crapload of weird stuff. I can't wait!

The Goods: Live Hard. Sell Hard. While this is just another movie where Jeremy Piven is going to be his a-hole self, it still looks funny. And would we love him if he wasn't such a funny a-hole?

Name 7 Vince Vaughn:
Be Cool, Into the Wild, Thumbsucker, Domestic Disturbance, Fred Claus, Four Christmases, Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Kevin Bacon Game:
Vince Vaughn was in Mr & Mrs Smith with Brad Pitt who was in Sleepers with Kevin Bacon: 2 steps.

a. Old School
b. Mr & Mrs Smith
c. Starsky & Hutch
d. Be Cool

Absolutely nothing! Nothing interesting or remotely familiar. Just a bunch of "never heard of them" DVDs. (In case you didn't get it: There's nothing good coming out on DVD tomorrow)

Adorable Goodies

Underrated movie of the post:
Signs. This is one of the best M. Night Shyamalan movies out there. I remember I was way too scared to see it in theaters, but once I did watch it, I fell in love with M. Night's crazy twists and couldn't get enough! Signs is really good.
Movies to see:
Just Signs.

Trailers of the post:
Zombieland. This is reminiscent of Shaun of the Dead and I don't think I could be more excited. I love fake scary movies!!

Jennifer's Body. Speaking of fake scary movies... I actually think I might like Megan Fox in this. It looks fairly interesting.

Seth Green

Movies out Friday

Bruno - I absolutely loathed Borat, but I have to say that Bruno looks a little better. I'm still not going to see it though. I like Sacha Baron Cohen, but I don't like any of his ridiculous characters.

I Love You, Beth Cooper - This movie looks pretty funny. I wasn't initially interested in seeing it because Hayden Panettiere looked like a royal bitch. But from the previews, it actually looks pretty good.

Short, Red-Headed Goodies

Underrated movie of the post:
Rat Race. This movie is beyond hilarious and I can't even describe how great it is. It's an all-star cast and it is non-stop laughter from beginning to end. Love it!

Movies to see:
I Love You, Beth Cooper and Rat Race.

Trailers of the post:
I've decided that since there are so many great previews out there, and I'm falling behind, that I'm going to be posting two trailers per post. Lucky you!
Old Dogs. I love everything about this trailer. It looks so good! (Sorry about the link, but YouTube wouldn't let me embed the video)

a. Rat Race
b. Sex Drive

d. Italian Job

Jake Gyllenhaal

DVDs out on Tuesday

Knowing - This movie was a pleasant surprise. The cinematography was brilliant and the story was pretty interesting. While I probably won't rush out to buy it, I would most definitely recommend you Netflix it. It was highly enjoyable, even with Nicolas Cage's inability to show emotion. Haha.

Push - This movie was great! I'm going to run out and buy it first thing tomorrow. The story was awesome, the special effects were cool, and Chris Evans was really really good looking. I also credit this movie for making me like Dakota Fanning again. After her War of the Worlds fiasco where all she did was scream, I am not ashamed to say she annoyed me. This movie and The Secret Life of Bees show that she is a very good actress with a wide range.

The Unborn - Wasn't interested when it came out in theaters and I'm most definitely not interested now. From what I've seen in the previews (when I'm not hiding my eyes or changing the channel) it looks a lot like The Ring and The Grudge (only creepier) and stars that chick who looks a lot like Megan Fox, but isn't.

Summer Movie Review Part Five

The Proposal - Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock were brilliant in this movie. There was non-stop comedy from beginning to end with a little bit of drama/romance thrown in just to keep the genre of "Rom-Com" alive. Reynolds was his classic self with his unique and hilarious delivery and Bullock was just as great playing her role of uptight control-freak (see: Two Weeks Notice). The two off-set each other perfectly and the background characters only added to the humor (Mary Steenburgen, Betty White, etc). All in all, this is a very good chick flick and I can't wait to buy it (if only to see Ryan Reynolds in all his shirtless glory).

My Sister's Keeper - True to it's trailer, this movie made me cry from almost the very beginning to the end. While the most advertised actors were Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin (both did fantastic, by the way), I found myself more interested in the other members of the family. Jason Patric did a phenominal job, as did Sofia Vassilieva and Evan Ellingson (dying sister and older brother respectively). Vassilieva's performance was beautiful and very moving and I wouldn't be surprised if she wasn't up for some kind of award for it. I was intrigued to see Cameron Diaz in a serious role and I think she performed admirably. Despite the guarentee of tears, I would still suggest seeing this film as it is very eye-opening and thought provoking.

Public Enemies - Johnny Depp is gorgeous. That is pretty much the only thing I took away from this movie and I believe the director did this purposefully. There was hardly any scenes that didn't end with his pretty face filling the screen as he made some sort of sexy smirk causing female audience members to swoon uncontrollably. Marion Cotillard is beautiful as well and a fantastic actress. After seeing this, it is no surprise to me that she won an Academy Award. On another note, I've recently realized that with each Christian Bale movie I've seen since Batman Begins (except for The Prestige) I have disliked him more and more. I'm not sure if this has to do with the characters he plays, his performances, or if they're just bad movies, but I'm have been slightly more scornful of a movie if I find out he's in it (of course that doesn't usually keep me from seeing it, but still). Back to the film itself, this movie has shed a new light on Bio-Pics for me. It is a masterful piece.

Very Pretty Goodies

Underrated movie of the post:
Highway. Not only does this also star Jared Leto (who is nice to look at) and Selma Blair (who is awesome), but the story is interesting and Gyllenhaal is hilarious. It's an intense road-trip brought on by lost love and the fear for one's feet with a prostitute thrown in. It's a winner.

Movies to see:
Knowing, Push, and Highway.

Trailer of the post:
Brothers. I absolutely love Natalie Portman and any movie where Toby Maguire is the guy no one likes. This does, however, ring of Pearl Harbor, yes?

Name 7 Jake Gyllenhaal:
Zodiac, Rendition, Bubble Boy, Brokeback Mountain, Donnie Darko, Day After Tomorrow, Moonlight Mile.

Kevin Bacon Game:
Jake Gyllenhaal was in Day After Tomorrow with Emmy Rossum who was in Mystic River with Kevin Bacon: 2 steps.

Quote Quiz #88 winner:
Kristina takes it again with Finding Neverland. Great movie. Makes me cry every time.

QQ #89: Name this Jake Gyllenhaal movie:
"Those really ratty sandals she always loved to wear. They always made this incredible farting sound everytime she moved."

a. Highway
b. Moonlight Mile
c. Donnie Darko
d. Zodiac

Radha Mitchell

(Just in case you don't know who she is)

Movies out Wednesday

Ice Age 3D: Dawn of the Dinosaurs - While this is just another shameless attempt at milking more money out of parents, I don't care because I love the Ice Age movies and I'm going to see it! So there!

Public Enemies - Johnny Depp. Still need convincing? Gun fighting, car chases, and Christian Bale. Gonna be awesome.

Movie out Friday

I Hate Valentines Day - Nia Vardalos and John Corbett team up again since My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It looks like another cute chick flick and I love John Corbett. Love.

Little known goodies

Underrated movie of the post:
Feast of Love. This movie was essentially about sex and verged on porn, but the stories in between the naughty scenes were actually quite good. It's also filled with a ton of stars (Greg Kinnear, Morgan Freeman, Billy Burke, and Selma Blair). All in all, a pretty great movie.

Movies to see:
Ice Age 3, Public Enemies, I Hate Valentines Day, and Feast of Love.

Trailer of the post:
Surrogates. Bruce Willis!!! Also, this looks like a pretty intriguing story and, if you ignore the weird hair going on with BW's surrogate, then it looks like a great movie!

Name 7 Radha Mitchell:
Pitch Black, Feast of Love, Children of Huang Shi, Henry Poole is Here, Silent Hill, Mozart and the Whale, Man on Fire.

Kevin Bacon Game:
Radha Mitchell was in Man on Fire with Denzel Washington who was in Philadelphia with Tom Hanks who was in Apollo 13 with Kevin Bacon: 3 steps.

b. Silent Hill
c. Feast of Love
d. Mozart and the Whale
